Chapter Twenty-Three

Drake

That was, hands down, the best night of my life.

I poured myself a cup of coffee and leaned against the counter to stare out into the forest. Being here with Lex was better than I’d ever imagined. Just thinking about it had my cock hard to have her again, but she needed the rest. I’d woken Lex four times through the night. It was like a dream I was afraid to wake up from. Afraid I’d be without her again. And as she’d clung to me while I moved inside her, I knew she felt the same way, too.

The thought of her legs wrapping around my waist had my dick hardening. My damn boxers looked like a tent. I couldn’t get enough of her.

I checked the time; it was almost eight. Shit. We’d have to leave here in a couple of hours but I wasn’t ready for our time away to end. Last night, I used a condom every time. We’d been together two years before I entered her bare. I didn’t want to rush through the steps this time. It was imperative every single step we took, sexually, was taken with care. When I’d found out she was a virgin, I wanted to wait until she graduated high school. Hell, the woman tempted me time and time again to make love to her sooner. But it was important in case she ever changed her mind about us. I never wanted to be on her list of regrets.

I reconsidered waking her up, but I took a sip of my coffee and focused on the burn instead. I knew she’d be sore. She’d been tight, so fucking tight, last night. Every inch of her beautiful body was mine.

Every. Single. Inch.

The thought had the Neanderthal in me coming out with a need to possess her very being. I knew she could handle herself, but, hell, I wanted to slay every demon in her path.

Yesterday, I asked my dad to look into Lloyd’s accident. Dad was good friends with Roy, our local sheriff. Something about the timing of his death and the letter bothered me. Either Montgomery had gotten the letter two weeks ahead, which meant someone knew Lloyd was going to die, or they’d had the letter written in less than four days. That was hella fast to obtain someone’s handwriting, hire a professional to forge it, and get it into the lawyer’s hands.

What if it had been premeditated?

My fist clenched at the thought. For now, I wasn’t going to share my thoughts with Lex. Until I knew more, there wasn’t any reason to bring it up. Thinking your dad was murdered only brought on more unanswered questions. I’d share everything with her after Dad got back to me. The last thing she needed right now was more worry. And I knew she’d do the same if our roles were reversed.

I was taking another sip of coffee when I heard her soft footsteps on the kitchen floor. Her arms slipped around my waist, and she pressed her face into my back.
